The Technical Specs: QuestUAV 200 Design Requirements

Requirements:

  • Image a glacier in RGB with sufficient coverage to create a sub 10cm GSD Orthorectified mosaic of up to 50Ha in one flight.
  • Carry a robust camera that will shoot in RAW, cope with near zero temperatures and cope with snow buildup.
  • Automate the flights to the greatest degree possible to minimise pilot workload.
  • Create a robust UAV that will withstand repeated landings on harsh, rough, hard, glacial ice.
  • Ensure that the UAV can handle mountain winds and turbulence without structural damage.
  • Ensure that the UAV can be easily carried, launched, operated and retreived in a glacial environment.

UAV Solution:

  • QuestUAV 200 with up to 10000 MAH battery capacity  (selectable 5000, 7500 or 10000).
  • High visibility colour scheme to manage black, white and blue surroundings.
  • Lumix LX5  (tough, proven, shoots RAW). Internal triggering from autopilot.
  • Gimballed Cradle for camera to remove effects of roll during turning & turbulence.
  • Short wing set to cope with turbulence.
  • Airframe design and supporting equipment optimised for cold environment, skidoo carriage and international shipping to theatre.
  • Suitable training to manage UAV operations in a cold environment.
  • Adhesives, tapes and materials to manage cold climates.
